What is it?

The Bible is a collection of texts from different periods and genres, including stories, poetry, laws and letters. Christian Bibles contain Old and New Testaments, with the selection of books differing between traditions. Readers approach it for prayer, religious understanding, cultural references or the study of enduring questions about human life.

A poem, a law and a letter to a particular community call for different kinds of reading. Some passages contain violence or rules you may find troubling. An isolated sentence cannot settle how to interpret the whole collection, and communities can understand the same passage differently.

How long does it take?

Reading the whole Bible in short sessions is usually a project of months; some plans spread it across a year. You can also study one book or read short passages. Translation, notes and the purpose of your reading affect the pace.

Going straight from the first page to the last can bog you down in lists, laws and unfamiliar references. Meeting a daily quota does not establish understanding. Historical context and competing interpretations require more time than simply covering pages.

Who is it not for?

It may not fit a search for one continuous narrative or brief answers needing no context. An older translation can also make an interested reader struggle with the language.

If you have experienced religious pressure, passages may bring back difficult memories. Finishing is not something you owe anyone. Reading the text also does not tell you what every Jewish or Christian person believes: readers' lives cannot be reduced to the pages.

Self-reported experiences, not medical advice. High scores mean people reported strong positive effects. They do not mean something is safe, effective long-term, or appropriate for you. Self-reports can miss delayed harms, dependence, withdrawal, side effects, and selection bias. Don't start or stop a medication because of a chart.
