I’m building a tool to track my investments

My new project 👇

I’ve wanted to build a tool for investors for a while, but I didn’t want to make the usual thing.

I didn’t want to build another portfolio management tool or another TIKR redesign.

I wanted to make something a bit more original 👀

First, here’s the summary, then for anyone curious, the full explanation of what I’ve built and why.

💬 SUMMARY

I’m building a tool to help you keep better track of what’s happening with your investments.

🔎 News that actually matters

Find and filter news beyond the usual financial sources, narrowing hundreds of results down to a handful of relevant things.

🧠 Automatic thesis tracking

Compare each new event with what you expect from the company and keep building evidence for or against your thesis.

📅 Dynamic event calendar

Detect earnings, launches, acquisitions, regulation, factory openings and other important events, and update their dates as new information comes in.

At its core:

Know what’s really happening at your companies, what matters for your thesis and what’s coming next.

Without having to track everything manually.

📈 THE DETAILS

Here comes the long explanation of what I’ve built and why.

For those of you interested in transparency and building in public.

1️⃣ THE PROBLEM

I’ve already said I wanted to make something original.

But ideas are pretty limited.

Investor workflows and needs haven’t changed that much, and there are hundreds of tools that solve most problems.

On Find My Moat, I have a collection of 350+ investing tools.

So the question was:

What could I make that would actually bring something new to the table?

I knew the biggest opportunity was probably something related to LLMs, simply because there’s been less time for the market to get saturated.

And the nice thing is that I’m also an investor, so I have a sense of what could actually be useful.

After trying literally dozens, if not hundreds, of tools, there was one problem none of them had solved convincingly for me:

💬 Tracking news about my portfolio.

2️⃣ TOO MUCH NOISE, AND YOU STILL MISS THINGS

I’ve tried a thousand solutions.

They all give you generic news that’s pretty much useless.

Every day, you can easily get 3 or 4 useless news stories for every stock in your portfolio.

With a portfolio of 20 companies, that’s 60-80 news stories a day.

And you probably won’t care about 90% of them.

On top of that, almost all of them are purely “financial” news:

• Analyst estimates
• Upcoming earnings

• Price target changes

• The occasional Bloomberg headline

• Stock price movements

And pretty much all the tools rely on the same 5 sources.

But I care about something else.

I care about the business.

Its products.

Its management team.

Its competitors.

Its business developments.

I want to understand how a regulatory risk is playing out, how an acquisition is progressing, what partnerships the company is signing, or what’s happening in its industry.

Traditional tools completely miss a lot of this stuff.

So you get the worst of both worlds:

A ton of noise, and important news still never reaches you

It fails to filter.

And it fails to find things.

And that’s not even getting into microcaps, special situations or more niche companies.

In the end, you stop keeping a close eye on everything, trust Twitter’s algorithm to show you what matters, and end up seeing the same things as everyone else.

And that’s normal.

These tools have been around for 20 years.

Until recently, it was too expensive to build anything much more sophisticated than aggregating news from the usual providers.

Until now.

3️⃣ MY APPROACH

My approach is completely different.

I use an information search system that isn’t designed specifically for stocks.

In fact, you could use it to stay informed about pretty much any topic.

That lets me find cross-cutting news and developments that probably would never make it onto Bloomberg’s front page.

Then I use LLMs to analyze what’s been found.

Each news story is:

• Classified as relevant or irrelevant
• Scored for importance

• Categorized by type

• Linked to the relevant company

And users can customize what they want to see for each company.

The goal is very simple:

Make sure all the important news reaches you, and that you can ignore the rest.

If there are 200+ possible news stories a day related to your portfolio, maybe you only need to look at the 5 that actually matter.

The more companies you follow, the more useful it gets.

🔎 FIRST PART: KEEP TRACK OF EVERYTHING IMPORTANT

That’s the first part of the product.

Keep you informed about the important things happening in your portfolio, effortlessly.

Without having to read stuff that’s no use to you.

And with much more confidence that you’re not missing something important.

The idea seems simple.

But you don’t realize how much you were missing until you start finding news you didn’t even know existed.

🧠 SECOND PART: THESIS TRACKING

This is where things get a lot more interesting.

Because what matters about a news story isn’t just the news itself.

It’s how it affects your investment thesis.

There’s no point knowing a company is opening a new factory in China if your thesis depends on the CEO changing or a regulatory risk in the US going away.

In the app, you can briefly write down what matters for your thesis.

For example:

“I expect regulation in Europe to ease.”

“It would be really bad if margins deteriorate in Asia.”

“I think competitors will grow more slowly.”

You can keep it as simple or detailed as you want.

From there, the app automatically compares new events against your thesis.

And starts tracking whether what’s happening in the real world:

✅ Supports your thesis
❌ Weakens it

⚪ Doesn’t change anything relevant

Over time, you build up evidence.

And three months from now, when you ask yourself:

“Has X happened?”

You don’t have to rely on your memory.

You have a list of events and news stories with all the evidence that’s built up.

All automatic.

You write down what matters and the system keeps track of the world for you.

And obviously, this part is completely optional.

If you don’t like writing an investment thesis, you can just use the news system.

📅 THIRD PART: DYNAMIC EVENT DISCOVERY

This approach also lets me do something else pretty interesting.

As new stories come in, the system automatically builds a calendar of important events related to your companies.

From traditional things like:

• Earnings presentations
• Investor Days

• Shareholder meetings

To much less structured things:

• Opening of a new factory
• Acquisition deadline

• Product launch

• Regulatory decision

• Start of production

And it doesn’t need an exact date.

It can understand things like:

“Q1 2027”

“During the second half of the year”

“Before the end of September”

And automatically update the event as new information comes in.

The idea is to end up with an extremely complete calendar of everything that could matter for your investments.

Again:

Filtered by relevance, importance and category.

🚀 WHAT’S NEXT?

It’s pretty different from the other tools I’ve tried.

And I’ve put a lot of care into building it.

The app is almost ready.

Before launching it, I want to run a closed beta with a few people to get feedback and keep improving it.

And I think, with the infrastructure it has, it could grow quite a bit.

For example, in the future it could also track private competitors of the companies in your portfolio.

Something traditional financial tools can barely do.

But first:

Closed beta → feedback → public launch.

And from now on, I want to build it pretty publicly.

💬 I WANT TO TRY IT

If you want to try it completely free during the beta, leave me a comment.

I’ll try to select a small group of people, in addition to a few I already have in mind.

And if you’re interested in seeing how the project evolves, I’ll start documenting it here.

You can follow me so you don’t miss anything.

It’s been (and still is) a whole lot of work, so if you like the idea, a like ❤️ or an RT 🔄 helps a lot.
