🥖 5 misconceptions about dividend investing Today I’ve got a short thread to clear up some misconceptions I’ve seen about dividends on social media. Are dividends deducted from the share price? What does Warren Buffett think about dividends? Let’s take a look! 🧵

    1. Are dividends deducted from the share price? 📉 > “Dividends don’t affect the share price.” I’ve heard this a thousand times and IT’S FALSE. Dividends DO affect the price.

  2. 3

    2) “Dividend-paying stocks do better in the market” 📈 People often confuse causation here. They assume: “Paying dividends causes good stock market performance.” This is NOT true (at least not entirely).

  3. 4

    3) “Most of the S&P 500’s returns come from reinvested dividends” This may be true for certain periods, but it is NOT an argument for dividend investing. The key nuance here is to consider the counterfactual.

  4. 5

    4) “A high yield (>7%) is easy and desirable” This claim is incredibly dangerous if you don’t talk about the risks. It’s worth highlighting the risk of yield traps. Companies with high dividends, but at the expense of a deteriorating business or future dividends.

  5. 6

    5) “Buffett is pro-dividends” Buffett isn’t “pro” or “anti” dividends per se; it depends on the reinvestment opportunity. If the company can reinvest at high returns, it’s better to retain capital or buy back shares (if the price is right). If not, pay dividends.

That’s it for today’s short thread. Hope you liked it and that it helps clarify a few things. For some reason, dividends are a very controversial topic in the investing world and are presented as a magic cure-all. Be careful with the magic 🪄

Everyone wants a side project that makes MONEY while you sleep. well, I launched one: Find My Moat (link in my profile). it’s a collection of 150+ investment tools, organized and filtered. and yeah… it’s completely free. but here’s the interesting part: 👉 how do you monetize something like this?

spoiler: I don’t expect to make a dime at first. this is a long-term game. the key: bring in recurring traffic from investors. if I pull that off → this project is worth a lot more than it looks.

  2. 3

💰 option 1: direct monetization the usual stuff for free websites: • affiliates • ads • sponsorships the good: CPMs in investing are insane. the bad: if I annoy users, the project dies.

  3. 4

🚀 option 2: indirect monetization this is where it gets really interesting: • drive traffic to my X account • grow my Substack • spot empty categories → build my own tools • add premium features each piece feeds into the others. a distribution + product flywheel.

  4. 5

is it easy? hell no. will it work? I don’t know either. but if it works, it could be the perfect side project for my profile: SWE + investing. and if it doesn’t… at least I’ve built the tool I wanted.
