Have you tried it?

What is it?

Temporarily abstaining from masturbation, often alongside avoiding pornography, as in some NoFap challenges. People may want to stop spending hours on porn, feel more in control or see how they feel without the habit. Approaches vary: some participants stop using pornography while continuing to masturbate.

Masturbation itself does not establish addiction, and desire or guilt alone does not establish a disorder. If time spent on pornography is the problem, avoiding all sexual activity may add unnecessary restrictions. Forum testimonials cannot guarantee that abstinence will transform your life.

What does it take?

Decide what you want to change and why. If the pattern involves being alone with your phone, plan for that situation rather than only counting days. You can restrict access to content you want to avoid and seek support without publishing intimate details in a public forum.

Boredom, anxiety or loneliness may be part of what keeps the pattern going. Banning masturbation does not address those difficulties. If sexual behavior feels beyond your control and disrupts work, sleep or relationships, seek a professional experienced in sexual health.

Why do people quit?

Desire continues, the rules feel too restrictive or the hoped-for change never arrives. You may also decide you want to stop using porn without giving up masturbation. Revising a goal thoughtfully is not the same as failing it.

Treating one instance of masturbation as losing all progress can create a cycle of shame and stricter challenges. A streak does not measure your worth. If guilt is causing more distress than the behavior itself, that deserves attention rather than another longer prohibition.

Self-reported experiences, not medical advice. High scores mean people reported strong positive effects. They do not mean something is safe, effective long-term, or appropriate for you. Self-reports can miss delayed harms, dependence, withdrawal, side effects, and selection bias. Don't start or stop a medication because of a chart.
