Have you tried it?

Only answer if you've tried Yoga. What did it do for you?

What is it?

Yoga includes physical postures, breathing practices and meditation. In a typical movement class, you hold positions or move through a sequence under an instructor's guidance. People attend to work on flexibility, move their bodies or set aside a quieter part of the day. Sessions range from gentle to physically demanding.

The class name may tell you less than you expect. A session can be faster, harder or more spiritual than the one you had in mind. If you wanted a quiet stretch and find yourself struggling to follow a sequence, the mismatch can put you off immediately.

Survey answers are converted to these five answers. Each share above counts only the questionnaires that offered that answer, because not every survey offered all five.

What does it take?

You need room to move, comfortable clothing and either a class you can attend or time to practise at home. A studio may provide equipment. At first, part of the work is simply learning the instructions and where to put your hands and feet.

Trying to match someone else's range of movement can cause injury. You need to be able to mention pain or a limitation and ask for an alternative. Feeling awkward about interrupting is a poor reason to force yourself into a position.

Why do people quit?

The class may be too slow, too demanding or badly explained for your level. At home, interruptions can end a session before you have settled into it. An inconvenient timetable makes even a class you like easy to miss.

You may also be disappointed if you expected every session to leave you calm or your flexibility to change quickly. Paying for another class package will not resolve a poor fit with the teaching, schedule or practice itself.

Self-reported experiences, not medical advice. High scores mean people reported strong positive effects. They do not mean something is safe, effective long-term, or appropriate for you. Self-reports can miss delayed harms, dependence, withdrawal, side effects, and selection bias. Don't start or stop a medication because of a chart.
